Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Receives Prestigous Garland Award in Recognition of Olympic Contribution

Los Angeles, Calif. – July 17, 2007 – Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa received the prestigious William May Garland Award from the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games (SCCOG) at an event last evening in recognition of his service to the cause of the Olympic Movement in Los Angeles and active involvement in the Los Angeles 2016 Olympic Bid.

Mayor Villaraigosa joins Juan Antonio Samaranch, Lord Killanin, John C. Argue, Mayor Tom Bradley, Anita L. DeFrantz, Peter Ueberroth, Harry Usher and Paul Ziffren on the list of recipients of the award named in honor of the founder and first president of the SCCOG. Mayor Villaraigosa is the first to be honored with the award in 10 years.

“The Los Angeles 2016 Olympic bid was a massive undertaking that was highlighted by the unprecedented across the board support of leaders at all levels of government,” said SCCOG Chairman Barry Sanders. “At the forefront of that effort was Mayor Villaraigosa, who demonstrated commitment and passion for the cause and for the entire Olympic movement. He is most worthy of this honor.”

Mayor Villaraigosa played an integral role in the bid process and continues to provide support to the Olympic movement. His leadership was instrumental in establishing the broad public-private partnership which was the hallmark of the bid.

Among his many activities during the 2016 bid campaign were key roles in both the USOC site visit to Los Angeles and the presentation of the bid to the USOC board in Washington D.C., hosting of a press conference with Governor Schwarzenegger at the Los Angeles Coliseum, hosting of a press conference at City Hall to discuss the potential economic impact of a Los Angeles games and a memorable role in a Disney-produced short-film highlighting Los Angeles’ commitment and offering to the Games.
