Los Angeles’ Bid for the 2016 Olympic Games

In a domestic competition which began in 2005, Los Angeles was one of five U.S. cities invited by the United States Olympic Committee to compete for the right to be the U.S. candidate for the 2016 Olympic Games.  After the USOC eliminated Houston and Philadelphia from consideration, San Francisco withdrew from the bid process, leaving Los Angeles and Chicago as the two final contenders.  The USOC chose Chicago over Los Angeles in April 2007.  In the ensuing international bid competition, the IOC in October 2009 selected  Rio de Janeiro as the Host City for the 2016 Olympic Games.
